What’s Up Wednesday is the weekly blogfest to share the answers to a few simple questions… Join us!
What I’m Reading:
Well, I just finished reading a bunch of short stories involving time travel, from an anthology called Time Wars, that I found in a box down in the lobby of my building, marked free. Some interesting stuff about folk getting lost in alternate time lines (and there was even a Harry Harrison story in there – though, no Stainless Steel Rat). Last night, though, I finally started reading Stonewielder, by Ian C. Esselmont. Its his third novel, set in the same world of Malaz that Steven Erikson writes. So far so good, though I’ve only finished the prologue and am just getting into the first chapter. I will say this: after months going back and forth on the ‘rules of writing’ and debating here and there what kind of language to use (passive vs. active voice, avoid adverbs, yadda-yadda) its refreshing to see that Mr. Esselmont, who holds a PhD in English Literature, throws all the bullshit out the window in name of good storytelling.
What I’m Writing:
If you’ve been following this blog, then you know that I’ve been writing my NaNo Novel, Ain’t No Redemption, and, after a couple of bumps that I had to smooth out, I must say that it is going swimmingly. The plot is thickening and the game is afoot; Bates is becoming more and more conflicted – and getting nice and ornery about it too. I’ve been really happy with his development.
What Inspires Me:
To be honest, time is what’s been most inspiring, that is, time from work to chip away at the novel. I have today and tomorrow off and I find that just knowing I have all day (save for the small honey-do list that the Wife has left me) sparks me to hit the keyboard at a run. On top of that, the Wife and I just finished watching season one of the X-Files last night, and I’ll say that something about watching that show gets me going, storytelling-wise. Maybe its the writing of the show, or just reliving that feeling of mystery and discovery that I felt when the show was airing on television, I don’t know. What I do know is that the world is a better place with Mulder and Scully poking about and bringing light to dark conspiracy. The Truth is Out There, and yes, I Want to Believe!
What Else I’ve Been Up To:
Writing, writing, writing, reading, writing. Repeat.
